Orange Marmalade by Seok Woo

Chapters: 119
Volumes: 8
Status: Complete
Genre: Comedy, Drama, Romance, School Life, Shoujo, Slice Of Life, Supernatural

Vampires have evolved and don’t rely on human blood anymore. They now co-exist secretly as normal citizens even though they are still feared and discriminated against by the society. So what happens to a female vampire trying to live a normal school life when she meets the most popular boy in school and accidentally nips his neck?

When I started reading the first 20 chapters, I thought that I’m going to hate it. I just don’t like how Jae-Min the male MC’s misogynistic ways and stalking activities. Seriously he’s such a hypocrite when he hates girls touching and fawning over him but then he does it to Ma-ri. I really hate double standards so I did not swoon over him at all. Probably the main reason why my rating is not that high.

Although the male MC did not win me over, I must admit that I like Ma-Ri‘s character. A modern vampire completely drawn to Jae-Min’s sweet blood. Very Twilighty eh? One thing for sure, I like her better that Bella Swan. Vampires co-exist with humans, they are mostly extinct but they are considered as second class citizens, and even though there’s a treaty they are still feared because they drink blood. However they  have evolved to drinking pigs blood instead, but still they are forced to move from one place to another because of discrimination. As a result,  Ma-ri maintained a distant relationship with any of them to protect herself. But I guess no species can survive alone. we all need to form a bond; a connection to others to be completely happy. I’m glad that Ma-ri was able to gradually open herself more to others.

This supernatural webtoon/manhwa was very realistic in portraying racism and other prejudice. It’s in Vampires nature to drink blood, The difference in food preference should not warrant harassment from humans. Same goes with color, gender, cultural beliefs, religion and sexual orientation. I’m quite happy with how the romance turned out, and the ending was just right, it’s not the happily ever after ending but it felt real.

She is young by Donggul Gom, JS

Chapters: 74
Status: Complete
Genre: Comedy, Drama, Ecchi/smut, Mature, Romance, Seinen, Supernatural
Synopsis: none

Recently I’ve been immersing myself to reading a lot of Manhwa (korean web comics) … and lately I’ve been craving the mature/romance/ecchi/harem/comedy/NTR genres when I stumble upon this. Oh please I know what you’re thinking but I just want my reads to be of variety and I kinda appreciate this even though I’m a lady but I must say that the guys got the majority of reading this type of Manhwa.

I like how the romance involved time travel. I think the concept maybe a little cliche but still I loved how it’s done. Jia and Duk-shin have been a couple for 10 years but lately Duk-shin felt like they’ve lost their passion. Sex has become tedious and they’re like operating on tolerance. It made him miss how Jia was when they dated a few years back, it made him miss how their first time felt like and wished that he could re-live it over again. And then it happened! The Jia from the past traveled back to fix the future.

The start was slow but the humor was there but then surprisingly the plot got heavier, we get to see how their relationship crumbled when a third party got involved and of course there’s also the financial and family issues, the slice of life was there. I never know why Jia’s father is always mentioned in some scenes but he’s actually very important in the story, and I’m really not gonna tell you more of it because I’m just gonna spoil it for you. There’s a  numerous amount of adult content in here, they are highly graphical and steamy (some of it are ridiculous!) so if you’re easily offended then better stay away, I repeat stay away! LOL^^   But I love how it’s done, I am very much satisfied with the ending and the epilogue is just so worth it! *cries*

Hana-kun to Koisuru Watashi by Fuyu Kumaoka

Volumes: 10+
Chapters: 42
Status: ongoing
Genres: Shoujo, Romance, School, Slice of Life

Nanase Sakashita is good at playing the role of Model Student but that doesn’t stop her from taking an interest in Hana-kun, the schools delinquent. Hana-kun accidently drops a small box while sneaking around on the school grounds. When Nanase tries to return the box, Hana-kun tells her to keep it for its already to late to give it to the person he likes, who is this person?

I really loved how this manga is so simple yet it captures how real a person who is in love feels. Sometimes you fall for the peculiar guy who doesn’t match you. Delinquents are often misunderstood, the stigma that the society view them are construed wrongly, that they are not worthy to be loved but all people deserve to be loved. This manga offers us the a slice of life, all of us have someone we love but often enough they are not reciprocated. Unrequited love is really sad, I know we all have been victims of this kind of love but yeah that’s life for you. (^^)

Black bird by Kanoko Sakurakouji

Volumes: 18
Chapters: 72
Status: Completed
Genres: Shoujo, Mystery, Drama, Romance, Supernatural

He loves her blood, but does her love her?!

There is a world of myth and magic that intersects ours, and only a special few can see it. Misao Harada is one such person, and she wants nothing to do with magical realms. She just wants to have a normal high school life and maybe get a boyfriend. All that changes one day when Misao is attacked by a demon. Her childhood friend Kyo suddenly returns to save her and tend to her cuts–with his tongue! It turns out Misao is the bride of prophecy, whose blood gives power to the demon clan who claims her. But most demons want to keep her power for themselves–by eating her! Now Misao is just trying to stay alive…and decide if she likes it when Kyo licks her wounds.

“If a monster drinks my blood, his life will be prolonged. If he eats my flesh he will never grow old, he’ll be immortal. If he takes me for his wife, his whole clan will prosper.”

Misao has become the Holy Fruit for demons and because of that she’s become the target of Demon Clans. I like the premise enough but I just can’t stand the perverseness of this manga. Oh sure the smut is hot but I just don’t like perverted leading men and guys who use force on women. Shoujo manga is supposed to be read but young girls so basically it’s like a Young Adult book but I think the content in this manga is not really appropriate for young girls. I sorta skimmed through some chapters, I’m amazed I’ve finished the whole 18 volumes, I said to myself I’m just gonna give it up after 10 volumes but the story got interesting for me and the ending satisfied me so I guess it was not so bad after all.

I definitely won’t recommend this book to young girls because of the smut and I hate it because some of the volume covers shows that the male MC ties the girl or chokes her, that didn’t happen in the actual manga, he’s just a perverted asshole but has his sweet side too. I guess this is one of those guilty pleasure manga reads … LOL^^
